The Ultimate 2026 Amphibious Boat Buyer’s Guide
New Zealand has become a global leader in amphibious boating, developing some of the most practical and capable systems in the world. Many of the Kiwi amphibious boats are serious offshore-ready craft designed to perform as proper boats first, with the added convenience of travelling short distances on land. Currently, nearly 90 amphibious boat models are available from 19 different manufacturers in NZ, and the numbers are growing.
For a country with endless coastline, surf beaches, tidal ramps, remote bays, lakes and a strong coastal living culture, amphibious boats make a great deal of sense. They remove many of the hassles associated with traditional trailer boating and open up access to places that would otherwise be difficult to reach, and make boating in general, just that much easier.
What Is an Amphibious Boat?
An amphibious boat is essentially a conventional powerboat fitted with a retractable wheel system mounted beneath the hull. These wheels deploy when required, allowing the boat to launch, retrieve or move across beaches, ramps and firm ground before retracting clear of the water for normal boating use. Most systems are powered hydraulically or electrically and are designed for low-speed land travel, usually around walking pace to approximately 9km/h. Their purpose is practical movement rather than road transport or off-road adventure.
Why They Work So Well in New Zealand
Few countries are better suited to amphibious boating than New Zealand. Beach launching is common, and many coastal areas have limited or tidal ramp access. Amphibious boats allow owners to launch directly from sand, drive on and off drying ramps, and access private beaches or waterfront properties with ease. They are also popular with solo boaties and families because launching and retrieval can often be handled without assistance. Amphibious boats can extend a boatie’s time on the water; when managing a trailer at the ramp becomes difficult, their ease of use adds years to an ageing boatie’s boating life. Another advantage is reduced reliance on immersing trailers in saltwater, helping minimise corrosion and maintenance.
Why New Zealand Leads the Market
New Zealand’s reputation in the amphibious sector comes from decades of expertise in trailer boat building and hull designs suitable for rough-water performance with practical marine engineering. Combined with the Kiwi habit of solving real-world problems through innovation, it created the perfect environment for amphibious boating to evolve. Several companies have helped shape the category, including amphibious system specialists such as Anura, Sealegs and Tectrax, along with many manufacturers now producing dedicated amphibious craft across a range of sizes and styles.
Types of Amphibious Boats Available
The most common amphibious boats in New Zealand are aluminium pontoon models. Their reserve buoyancy, stability and rugged construction make them ideal for beach launching and family boating. RIB centre consoles are popular with anglers who want open deck space and easy fishability, while cabin boats, alloy, GRP and RIBs, all appeal to those heading offshore or boating year-round in mixed weather. Catamarans are also emerging as an attractive option thanks to their stability and generous deck area.
Understanding the Wheel Systems
Modern amphibious systems typically use either three-wheel or four-wheel layouts. Three-wheel systems commonly feature one wheel forward and two aft. They are lighter, simpler and highly manoeuvrable. Four-wheel systems spread weight more evenly and can be advantageous on soft sand or larger, heavier boats. Power options may include petrol-driven hydraulics, electric-over-hydraulic systems or full electric drive technology. Some models integrate wheel steering with the boat’s helm, while cameras mounted forward can assist with visibility and precision when manoeuvring ashore.
What to Consider Before Buying
Choosing the right amphibious boat starts with understanding how you intend to use it. If fishing is the priority, a centre console or open pontoon layout may suit best. For family cruising, watersports or bach/crib use, a cabin or cuddy model with more seating and storage may be preferable. Those venturing offshore should focus on hull design, fuel capacity and weather protection.
Size is another major factor. Smaller boats are easier to tow and store, while larger models provide greater comfort, range and capability. Engine choice, electronics, live bait systems, anchoring setups and onboard extras such as fridges, heaters or solar panels can also influence the final package. Most importantly, be realistic about budget. Amphibious boats carry a premium over conventional trailer boats due to the engineering involved.
Price Guide in New Zealand
As a general guide for 2026:
Smaller 5.5m to 6m amphibious boats often begin around NZ$180,000 to NZ$250,000.
Mid-size 6.5m to 7.5m models commonly range from NZ$250,000 to NZ$400,000.
Premium larger boats can sit between NZ$400,000 and NZ$700,000.
Much larger, highly customised luxury or commercial craft may exceed NZ$1 million.
Final pricing depends heavily on engine package, electronics, finish level and optional equipment.
Benefits of Ownership
For the right owner, the appeal is obvious. Amphibious boats can eliminate ramp queues during peak summer periods, make boating easier for older owners or young families, and create access to remote beaches, estuaries and lake edges. They are especially attractive in regions such as the Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Marlborough Sounds and Great Barrier Island, where waterfront access can be a major lifestyle advantage. They also suit a wide variety of uses including fishing, diving, family adventures, island commuting, tourism operations and some rescue or commercial roles. New Zealand amphibious boat builders a are receiving more and more enquiry from overseas markets, with one retailer in Queensland, Australia, actually setting up business as a 100% Amphibious boat retailer.
Safety and First-Time Use
Before taking delivery, spend time learning the wheel system, controls and operating procedures. Read the owner’s manual carefully and complete a pre-launch checklist each time. Use the amphibious system only in suitable conditions and on terrain appropriate to the boat. Avoid soft drop-offs, deep potholes, surf zones or crowded areas. Standard boating safety rules still apply, including carrying the correct gear and wearing lifejackets where appropriate.
Is an Amphibious Boat Right for You?
If you launch frequently, dislike crowded ramps, own waterfront property, boat alone or simply value convenience, an amphibious boat can be a game-changer. If you always launch from marinas, use your boat only occasionally or want the lowest-cost, simplest ownership experience, a conventional trailer boat may still make more sense, less the convenience.
Final Word
Amphibious boats are one of New Zealand’s smartest marine innovations because they solve genuine boating frustrations while expanding where and how people can use their boats. For buyers whose lifestyle suits them, they can transform the boating experience and deliver a level of freedom few other vessels can match.
We now take a look at the leading manufacturers and amphibious technologies, and what they have to offer for 2026.
Assault (Family Boats): Assault offers two amphibious RIBs, the Pursuit 8 and the Pursuit 920, fitted with the Anura Retractable Wheels System. Built in NZ, the fibreglass hull and hardtop are moulded to perfection, creating a sleek, sporty silhouette. You can choose 1100 or 1670Dtex Hypalon inflatable tubes to complete the match. Below the waterline, a 25.5-degree deep vee hull gives the Assaults a ride second to none with exceptional stability at rest and underway. The Pursuit 8 features a ‘short cabin’ with a walk-through to the bow, offering excellent storage space without compromising functionality. The Pursuit 920 can be optioned with the same ‘short cabin’ style, or a long cabin version (with an optional bow seat), making it a suitable overnighter. Both models offer a spacious cockpit lending itself to a variety of uses – add a tube ladder for diving trips, bait station and rocket launcher for the fisher folk, or a comfortable bench seat for additional passengers. The Assault Pursuit 8 and 920 are high-volume RIBs offering all-weather protection while comfortably carrying upwards of 10 passengers, making them the ideal choice for recreational day trips or commercial operations.
Extreme Boats: Set to make a bold new move into the amphibious market, unveiling the Project Xpedition at the recent 2026 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show. Marking the brand’s first venture into amphibious boating, this innovative platform is built on the proven Game King 696 hull and designed for owners who value effortless access, versatility, and convenience without compromising the renowned performance and craftsmanship for which Extreme Boats is known.
Fin Chaser Boats: Fin Chaser, formerly known as FC Boats, offers an extensive range of amphibious boats from 5.6 – 8.0m, designed to meet the needs of avid anglers, divers and boating enthusiasts, designed and built in Hamilton. Their boats are renowned for their usable internal space, dry running, stability and great handling at sea. One of the outstanding features of Fin Chaser’s amphibious boats is their NZ-designed Anura amphibious 3-wheel and 4-wheel drive technology. Flyfin Boats: Flyfin Boats has established a strong reputation in New Zealand’s premium aluminium boat market, producing a range of amphibious vessels that combine innovative engineering, striking design, and serious on-water capability.
Founded by designer and builder Nick Fenton, Flyfin was created around a simple philosophy: aluminium boats should be more than practical and durable, they should be exceptional. Every boat produced at the company’s Papamoa Beach facility reflects that vision, with careful attention paid to construction quality, aesthetics, and the finer details that separate a good boat from a great one.
The Flyfin Amphibious range currently includes four models: the 700, 750, 820, and 850. While each offers its own balance of size, performance, and functionality, all are built to the same exacting standards. Designed specifically for New Zealand conditions, these boats provide owners with the freedom to launch from beaches, explore remote coastlines, and access fishing locations beyond the reach of many conventional trailer boats.
A major part of that capability comes from the Tectrax T3000 Gen2 Amphibious System. Flyfin was the first boatbuilder in the world to partner with Tectrax, working closely with its engineering team to integrate a purpose-built electrical amphibious system. The result is a seamless drive-on, drive-off experience that enhances both convenience and accessibility.
For 2026, Flyfin has taken things a step further by introducing the new R Series. Built on the proven Amphibious platform, the R models feature heavier 8mm plate construction, thicker toughened glass, a bespoke blue water hull design, and Seakeeper RIDE active trim control as standard. Carbon-fibre seating packages further reinforce the premium nature of the range.
Notably, every R model has been designed with performance as the primary objective. The larger dimensions and increased beam reflect Flyfin’s commitment to creating boats that excel on the water first and foremost.
Guided by three core principles – performance, aesthetics, and design. Flyfin continues to build boats that stand out both at the boat ramp and offshore.

Iguana: French-built Iguana brings a distinctive European edge to the amphibious market and is now available in New Zealand and Australia through a local agent. At the heart of each vessel is Iguana’s patented retractable track system, offering superior grip on sand, mud and steep terrain. This allows seamless land-to-water transitions at the push of a button, while eliminating the drag and spray. Composite construction and Hypalon tubes ensure durability, while deep-vee hulls deliver a soft, dry ride offshore. Clean lines, premium finishes and versatile layouts make Iguana suitable for luxury tenders, family boating or commercial use.
Image Boats: Invercargill-based Image Boats Ltd offers seven models in the amphibious, retractable-wheel boat range, all of which are big boats! The Fishfinder range is 7m, 7.25m and 7.5m, all with a 2.5m beam. The Fishmaster 7.75 sports a 2.7m beam, and the top-of-the-range Fishmaster 8m, 8.25m, and 8.5m all feature a 2.8m beam. The Fishmaster 8.5 is a true offshore craft, and fitted with the Anura S40 Amphibious System, its versatility has been greatly enhanced. Based on the 8.5m Fishmaster hull, the boat is actually 8.8m overall with a beam of 2.8m and features a solid, heavily built 6mm alloy hull. This strongly built hull, with its fine entry and 17° deadrise, easily slices through choppy waters. A few years ago, Image Boats built a 7.5m Fishfinder model with a Sealegs system and, like its bigger sistership, was designed for serious fishing. This highly successful model is still available. Although Image Boats builds an impressive range of production vessels, they also welcome the opportunity to work with customers wanting a custom-sized boat.
Innovision Boats: Most production boats are designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience. The Innovision IV7000 Amphibious takes a different approach, offering owners the opportunity to create a vessel tailored to their individual boating and fishing requirements.
The process begins with the proven IV7000 platform, a hull refined over more than a decade and earning a reputation for its impressive ride quality, stability, and fishability. From there, owners work alongside the Innovision team to customise the boat to suit their specific needs. Rod holder locations, live well arrangements, electronics packages, seating, storage solutions, and countless other details can all be configured to match the way the boat will be used.
The result is far more than a simple options package. It is a boat designed around the owner’s style of boating and the environments they frequent.
A key feature of the IV7000 is its amphibious capability, powered by the S25 Anura system. This technology allows access to areas that are often difficult or impossible for conventional trailer boats to reach.
Onboard, the layout has been designed with practicality in mind. The spacious deck provides ample room for anglers to work comfortably, while the uncluttered design ensures essential equipment is always within easy reach. A forward cabin adds another level of versatility, providing shelter and comfort for longer days on the water and extending the boat’s overall capability.
The Innovision IV7000 Amphibious combines proven performance, remarkable versatility, and a highly personalised approach to boat ownership, a package that continues to attract boaters looking for something beyond the ordinary.
King Watercraft: King Watercraft is excited to announce its entry into the amphibious boating world with a new amphibious RIB powered by Tectrax electric amphibious technology. This collaboration brings together innovative New Zealand design and next-generation amphibious technology to create a smarter, more accessible boating experience. The first boats are expected to hit the water in September 2026.
McLay Boats: The McLay 741 Raptor Gen2 amphibious boat is a whole new boat from its predecessor. The rear wheels retract into the fenders, reducing the risk of the anchor rope or fishing lines getting caught in the wheels. It has a very tight turning radius compared to most of its competitors, making it ideal for customers with challenging driveways. Featuring a 6mm bottom and 4mm sides and wheelhouse, it comes standard with a painted cabin and roof, complete with U-deck flooring, 16 Inch Simrad EVO 4 sounder and an extensive list of standard features. The boat is 8 meters overall, including the rear wheel fenders.
Using the new Tectrax Electric System that has done away totally with hydraulics, the wheels are driven by electric motors, which are much quieter than a petrol or diesel motor used to drive the hydraulics. Raising and lowering is done by electric worm drives. This method requires a lot less battery power compared with electric hydraulic systems giving a much longer run time. Recharging the battery after a day’s use is simply done by plugging it into a standard 240-volt 3-pin socket – it takes 2-3 hours to fully charge. The 741 Raptor has a very tight turning radius compared to most of its competitors, making it ideal for customers with challenging driveways. The electric motors in the wheel hubs have around 40% more torque than traditional systems and is the lightest system in its class.
Osprey Boat Builders: Custom build safe, reliable and sturdy aluminium boats for fishing, family recreation and commercial uses. Osprey’s Hardtops are exceptional fishing boats and are praised for their soft dry ride, stability, and load carrying capacity making them the perfect match for the Anura amphibious system. Ospreys 750 Hard Top, water taxi configuration can carry 18 passengers and 1 skipper when in survey, which makes adding the Anura system to this model a no brainer. Their boats are built to carry weight so adding the Anura system does nothing to compromise stability or handling. Osprey and Anura work together to ensure customers have the best possible outcome regarding the boat’s performance and from the Anura Amphibious System. The Osprey Hard Top Amphibious is available in several sizes. The 750HTA on the Osprey ELERT alloy trailer comes in at 3200kg, making it eminently towable.
Profile Boats: Designed initially as a safer beach-launching vessel, the Profile Boats range has expanded to include craft ranging from family recreation to seriously good dive and offshore fishing boats. The inherent safety of the unique alloy chamber design provides superior stability, making all Profile Boats virtually unsinkable. Profile Boats are sold directly from the factory in Napier, New Zealand and are known for their high quality finish, and ride. The company currently build amphibious versions of the 635H, 735H and 835HW. Profile Boats works with both Anura and Tectrax systems.
Purekraft: In 2025, Purekraft Boats expanded its range with the introduction of the ROVA amphibious range. Designed and built in-house, the ROVA 29 is the result of a collaboration between four parties: Hall Marine Design, Purekraft Boats, Anura Amphibious Systems, and the first-up owners. The ROVA 29 showcases luxury motor yacht finishes, strong offshore capability, and practical features for commuting or exploration. The Hall Marine Design collaboration ensures refined performance and balance, while the amphibious system delivers true versatility.
Sealegs: While boats with wheels have been around for a long time, it wasn’t until the early 2000s, with the introduction of Sealegs that they became a commercial reality. Sealegs began as an idea on a napkin in 2001 which quickly turned into a prototype, a fibreglass inflatable with electric wheel motors, which evolved into a manufacturing company producing Sealegs amphibious craft using a hydraulic powerpack and drive motors. Based in Auckland, New Zealand, and founded by locals Maurice Bryham and David McKee-Wright, Sealegs has constantly been pioneering the way forward for amphibious boating since the first Sealegs came off the production line in 2004. Today there are over 1800 Sealegs craft spread over more than 52 countries around the globe, and the company have dedicated offices in the United States and Australia as well as a wide network of distributors and service agents.
Twenty years ago, Sealegs introduced the boating market to a simple concept, enabled by clever engineering and technology, using powerful motorised, steerable wheels driven by an onboard powerpack. The amphibious craft can be driven from a storage location, down a boat ramp or beach and into the water – all with the occupants remaining in the boat completely dry. All current amphibious wheeled boats have utilised this same basic Sealegs principle regardless of the brand.
For several years Sealegs also fitted their systems to other New Zealand boat manufacturers, but today (apart from custom craft over 9m) all boats with Sealegs technology are designed, manufactured, and assembled under one roof at their Auckland factory. However, the System 70 and System100 kits (soon to be followed by System 80 kits) are available to export markets and Sealegs will continue working with other builders to co-design and integrate Sealegs amphibious systems into their new craft builds.
The Sealegs range of boats is extensive and growing, both in the traditional RIB, full alloy cabin hardtops and more recently the Sealegs 3.8m electric tender. Sealegs offer several different size amphibious systems from the smallest electric System (System 20E) through System 70 petrol/hydraulic, System 70 Electric, System 80 petrol/hydraulic, and at the high end – the System 100 diesel/hydraulic.
With over 1800 craft shipped worldwide, coupled with ongoing development of new models, the future continues to look bright for this pioneering company… a company who some 20 years ago pioneered an entirely new sector of the marine industry.
Smuggler Marine: Smuggler has extended its long-standing reputation for high-performance boats into the amphibious sector, offering a versatile range of amphibious rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) from 6 to 11 metres. Built in New Zealand and trusted for 25-years, the brand combines its proven deep-vee hull designs with advanced amphibious technology, creating boats that transition seamlessly from land to water.
At the core of the range is the integration of the Anura amphibious system, including the S25 and optional electric-drive variants. These systems are engineered to work in harmony with Smuggler’s signature 23-27-degree hulls, delivering a soft, stable ride in a wide range of sea conditions. A key design advantage is the fully retractable wheel system: the forward wheel folds neatly into the bow, while the rear wheels retract into the inflatable D-tubes. This keeps the hull clean and streamlined, reducing drag and ensuring a drier, more comfortable experience underway. The amphibious lineup spans multiple configurations to suit different uses. Models such as the 800 Mid Cabin offer protection and practicality for longer trips or family use, with the option of electric amphibious drive for quieter, low-emission beach operations.
Meanwhile, sportier options like the Strata 800 Super Sport cater to those seeking a more open, social layout with strong performance credentials.
Beyond recreational boating, Smuggler’s amphibious craft are increasingly in commercial applications. Tourism operators, particularly in coastal regions like the Coromandel, benefit from the ability to launch and retrieve vessels without traditional infrastructure.
Custom builds, including larger vessels up to 11 metres such as the ‘Waka Kai,’ highlight the brand’s capability to deliver robust, purpose-built solutions.
Overall, Smuggler’s amphibious range blends innovation, practicality, and renowned on-water performance into a highly adaptable boating package.

White Pointer: White Pointer has built a range of high-performance fishing machines for more than 30 years. With a strong focus on both performance and craftsmanship and with over 600 boats built, White Pointer has an outstanding reputation. The 780 T-Rex, based on the popular and well-proven 7.8m hull, is their entry into the amphibious market. Built as a serious fishing machine, the all-alloy hull has a 6mm hull with an 8mm plate around the front wheel mounting. The 780 T-Rex features the Tectrax 3500 electronic system with all-wheel drive and braking. After a challenging R&D process with Tectrax, the amphibious systems manufacturer has proven to be an honourable company that has earned White Pointer’s vote of confidence. With its well-earned heritage in mind, White Pointer takes the design of its boats seriously, creating the ultimate amphibian. In a boat like this, they didn’t modify an existing model in their range; instead, they chose to invest in starting from a clean sheet of paper. With initial on-water tests loaded with the same weight as the eventually to be installed Tectrax system, they could better understand what is required to manage this system. Taking the test boat through various on-water manoeuvres was valuable in understanding the challenges ahead. With a new shear line and enlarged forward section to house the amphibious system, White Pointer has maintained cabin space in line with what you would expect on a boat of this size. Stunning looks, impeccable craftsmanship and performance come together in the T-Rex 780.
