New Zealand boatbuilder and racer Nic de Mey, President of the New Zealand Water Ski Racing Association, made his debut at the legendary Diamond Race and came away with second place in the F2 class.
The Diamond Race is held on a 100-metre-wide section of the Albert Canal at Viersel near Antwerp. The tight oval course features 2.5 km straights and delivers extremely close racing, with up to 14 boats on the water at once. It is widely regarded as one of the most gruelling events in the sport.
de Mey is now actively building Phantom F2 boats for northern-hemisphere water-ski racing. The advanced carbon raceboats are proving particularly well suited to the rough but fast water conditions common in those events. Moving forward, the next goal is to have at least four Phantoms competing at next year’s World Championships in the USA.
