Being built in Canterbury by SB Boatbuilders is a new 50 footer in collaboration with yacht designer Kevin Dibley of DYD Ltd. To be named ‘Aftershock 2’ this motor yacht will be powered by a 225 HP John Deere and achieve cruising speeds of 10+ knots. This is the second motor yacht built by SB Boatbuilders and plans are to use her for family cruising in and around NZ.
Overall length is 15.5m, with a beam of 4.40m and a displacement (half load) of 18,000kg. Aftershock 2 will carry 1000 litres of fuel and 1000 litres of water and is being built for serious coastal cruising. The layout features three cabins with an owner’s master cabin the bow plus port/starboard guest cabins. There are twin ensuites to service the three cabins.
The main saloon has a starboard side helm with settee aft. Opposite is a generous size galley with large servery areas and a U shape dinette forward. The cockpit layout has been designed around entertaining and functional use, with easy access to the large boarding platform. While the layout is particular to the owners, we can offer a variety of interior styles to suit a clients taste. Construction is a fibreglass hull, with all structure areas of the bulkheads, cabin and saloon using Ccmposite foam core. Â
There is a second helm station and further lounge area on the upper deck, with a crane and aft tender storage.
The hull and decks are composite construction with a timber laminated keel and ply/glass bulkheads. The owners wanted to retain the traditional look of timber using internal beams on white head linings combined with light weight ply foam glass panels for the wheel house decks and fly bridge. Carefully selected gel coated e-glass surfaces bonded to foam cores, where smooth gel coated finishes were needed for the entrance main bulkhead were chosen.
