Beginning Boating is an introductory short course designed for people who are new to boating and aren’t yet ready to take on the skipper’s role. This course covers the basics to help you become an informed crew member and to be more confident and relaxed on the water this summer.
What will I learn? You’ll learn the basics to help make your day on the water enjoyable including:
Common nautical terms
Trip planning
Lifejacket selection
Boating safety
Basic boating rules
Preparing for the unexpected
The course is easy to use and understand and is broken into separate sections, with an introductory video or audio clip for each. It includes short knowledge checks so that you can assess your learning as you progress.

It is always ready and waiting for you to complete, at your convenience, and you can revisit key aspects of it whenever you choose. Upon getting the course you will be sent an email that confirms your login details. If it fails to arrive, please check your junk email folder before contacting Coastguard Boating Education.
If, however, you are interested in taking on the responsibilities of a skipper, then Coastguard would highly recommend the more comprehensive Day Skipper course.
How much does it cost? It’s free, and, once completed, you can proudly print off your Beginning Boating course completion certificate.
