The Gore Boat Club Boat Marathon began in Kingston, then moved to Kelvin Heights (Queenstown), and eventually shifted to Te Anau. Originally, the event was always held on the first weekend of July—falling perfectly well after the end of the summer season and before the onset of the winter ski season. However, this timing also brought some challenges, with icy roads, sub-zero temperatures, and engine icing causing difficulties for participants in several years.

For many years, the marathon followed a 3-race format:
- Speed Race at 11:00 AM
- Nominated Speed at 12:30 PM
- Second Speed Race at 2:30 PM
In recent years, however, the event has returned to a two-race format.
Contestant Numbers:
While exact numbers are hard to recall, there were typically over 50 boats participating in the Nominated Speed section, with a similar number in the Speed races.
Speed Classes & Nominated Speed Race:
The boats were categorized into Speed Classes A to F, with the Nominated Speed race running alongside the Speed races. The competition in these sections was always intense, with many competitors pushing their limits to take the top spots.
Pickup Boat Numbers:
Several dozen boats would travel specifically for the weekend just to act as pickup boats for the race. The Queenstown leg of the event started at Kelvin Heights, crossing the lake to Hidden Island, then looping down towards Cecil Peak and back. This was a large, challenging circuit that was often raced in tough conditions, testing both the skill of the drivers and the reliability of their boats.
North Island Participation:
The Speed sections saw a strong turnout from the North Island, especially from offshore tunnel hulls. Many of these boats would travel south to compete in the entire southern season circuit, making the marathon a highly anticipated event for racers and fans alike.

GBC Member Support:
Over the years, GBC members have supported the event tirelessly. It was viewed as a mid-winter getaway—a break from the farm or business—where members could come together, celebrate the sport, and enjoy the camaraderie of the boating community.
Media Coverage:
The event used to receive coverage from News TV, helping to showcase the thrilling action and attract even more spectators and participants. The GBC 60th Boat Marathon became a landmark boating calendar event.
