This month I am taking one for the team and once again joining thousands of others for Dry July. I have done it before and found it very rewarding. Not only does raising money help to ease the burden and reduce the stress that comes with a cancer diagnosis and add a bit of comfort for those affected by cancer, but it’s also for my wellbeing.

Anyone who knows me well knows I am a sucker for a good red wine. If it’s not red (I have about 150 bottles in my cellar), it’s a gold rum, single malt or bourbon and, over the summer, beer. So now, for four weeks, I am going dry and will restrict my none alcoholic drinking to everything from water to ginger beer, tonic and maybe no sugar Coke.
Although you can get the occasional day you are allowed to drink, I have always resisted it. I feel it’s all or nothing and invite anyone else to join me. The first week is the hardest, but it gets much easier. I had a practice season earlier this year when I had a total knee replacement in early January, and due to the drugs I was on didn’t drink for over a month. Also a great weight loss programme, so I see a few more kilos dropping off by the end of July.
