Tauranga-based aluminium builder Herley Boats has begun construction on a fully custom 45-foot offshore platform, representing the largest and most technically ambitious vessel undertaken by the yard to date.
Designed as a high-performance monohull for extended offshore operation, the 45 places strong emphasis on structural integrity, weight distribution and propulsion optimisation from the outset. Hull form, centre of gravity and systems layout were resolved in the design phase before fabrication commenced, a process intended to maximise efficiency and predictable offshore handling at cruising speeds. At this scale, performance is no longer defined purely by top-end speed. Structural stiffness, ride quality, fuel efficiency, and service access are all critical to long-term usability. The 45’s aluminium structure has been engineered to balance strength and weight, with careful consideration given to offshore load paths and long-term durability.
The project marks a progression of Herley’s established Explorer range into a larger performance bracket, reinforcing the company’s focus on purpose-built aluminium platforms designed for serious coastal and offshore use. Construction is currently underway at the company’s Tauranga facility.
