Superyacht on New Marina in Whangarei New Zealand Across from the Port Whangarei Marine Centre.
Oceania Marine Shipyards has two shipyards at Port Whangarei. The Port Whangarei area forms part of the city of Whangarei, located in Northland, New Zealand. It was formerly a major commercial port but is now an essential marine service centre for a wide range of maritime clients. Over time the facilities were repurposed, and the support services established to make it the all-encompassing marine hub it is today.
There are many experienced operators in the port, and it can accommodate all types of vessels with haul out up to 1800 tonnes and berthage up to 175M. A significant upgrade in berthage facilities has just been completed by Port Nikau Joint Venture, which offers high-quality stern-to marina type berths for superyachts that have proven to be a major attraction right from day 1.
As a result of this upgrade, some of New Zealand’s top yacht agents, such as Integrated Marine Group and Urban Sea, have opened offices within the marina with other agencies servicing clients from their offices in Auckland. The attractive facilities were not the only driver for this happening. Auckland has become increasingly difficult for agents and their superyachts clients who require ease of access and more extended stays for refit/repair work to be carried out.
The above two very positive developments have resulted in an influx of superyacht projects to Whangarei. This has been a boon to the existing marine operators and suppliers and will drive increases in capacity to the benefit of all.
Oceania Marine’s South Shipyard is conveniently located alongside the new superyacht marina for any ‘on the water works that may be required and offering extensive storage for tenders. South Shipyard is also home to the Port Whangarei Marine Centre (an Oceania Marine subsidiary). The Marine Centre has a 100T travel lift, hardstand and refit sheds on a 4-hectare site. Stage 2 of the site development is well advanced, which will see a new 560T travel lift commissioned and operational by October/November. The machine manufacture will finish in just over a month then shipped from Cimolai’s factory in Italy to New Zealand. The civil engineers have almost finished pre-site preparations, and the exciting part of driving the piling is ready to start.
The new 560T travel lift will offer an efficient, high tech alternative for superyachts right alongside the new marina, making Port Whangarei a desirable destination for refit and repair works.
