MAN 175D engine certified as biofuel-ready.

MAN Energy Solutions issued two announcements last week related to its ongoing sustainability efforts, including the certification of its MAN 175D high-speed engine for operation on biofuels and the opening of registration for an upcoming webinar on methanolas a marine fuel.
The company says its 175D diesel, available in 12, 16 and 20 cylinder variants, has now been approved for operation with all standard biofuels, including HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) and FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) products with immediate effect. The firm noted that engines do not require any mechanical adjustments in order to work with approved biofuels, allowing their immediate use.
“MAN Energy Solutions prepares its engines for operation on future and sustainable fuels, and the MAN 175D is no exception,” said head of high speed sales, Florian Keiler. “Due to its state-of-the-art design, just a few engine components are subject to slightly higher wear, depending on the amount of biofuel and the duration of operation. For uninterrupted engine operation, only minor adaptations of the fuel-treatment system are necessary.”
While designed primarily for use on work boats, variants of the 175D engine range, withoutputs ranging from 2,000 to 5,900 horsepower, are also used in superyachts and naval applications.
