There has been a 57% increase in trailer boat manufacturing
A recent survey carried out by the NZ Marine Industry Association showed substantial growth.

A recent survey carried out by the NZ Marine Industry Association showed substantial growth for the New Zealand marine industry. – taking the total turnover from $2.3 billion in 2019 to $2.9 billion in the 12 months period to 31st March 2022.
There was a strong 28% growth in the domestic market, and exports have also grown 26%.“Given the challenges with material supply, international freight and distribution disruptions worldwide, it is a credit to the industry for their part in this growth.
“As an industry, we can be proud of the substantial contribution we make to the New Zealand economy’, says Peter Busfield, Executive Director, NZ Marine Industry Association.

He added that while the industry is suffering staff shortages that continue to restrict further growth, this would be a lot worse if it were not for the industry-owned Marine and Specialised Technologies Training Academy (MAST), as well as the 250 businesses employing and training the current 700 apprentices nationwide.
MAST Academy works with learners and employers to ensure people are trained with the necessary skills and knowledge to build successful lives and businesses. The goal is creating a centre of excellence for marine, composite and specialised technology training.

Founded in Aug 2021, MAST was established after the New Zealand Government announced the disestablishment of Industry Training Organisations (ITOs), which allowed NZ Marine, as a provider, to establish the new identity.
The previous NZMAC ITO (which MAST replaced) was the category winner for the Best Apprenticeship or Training Scheme in Boatbuilding at the International Boat Industry (IBI)-METSTRADE Boat Builder Awards held in Amsterdam. This global recognition was a testament to the initiative undertaken by kiwis to put themselves at the forefront of the global boating industry. The current MAST Academy is testimony to that.
