SCANIA LAUNCHES NEW INLINE ENGINE PLATFORM

Scania Power Solutions (formerly Scania Engines) has launched its next generation of inline engines.

Improvements include new power outputs, longer service intervals and a reduction in CO2 emissions. After a decade of engineering, the new engine platform is said to be more fuel efficient and powerful, has a significantly increased lifespan and a large reduction in CO2 emissions.

“This is our most fuel-efficient engine ever, with more torque, more power and up to 50% longer base engine lifespan. It’s a game-changer for Power Solutions,” says Joel Granath, senior VP and head of Power Solutions at Scania.

There are two new engines with varying power outputs for customers to choose from. The six-cylinder, 13lt engine ranges from 368kW-450kW, which delivers up to 11% more power and up to 21% more torque over the current generation engines. While the five-cylinder, 11lt engine ranges from 202kW-368kW.

Both engines go into serial production in 2024 for industrial, heavy equipment and power generation sets. Marine variants will join the line-up in the future.

Some of the other new design features include making the engines easier to service, more precise cooling, a more rigid engine block and cylinder head, and a more robust engine transmission with optimal gear strength.

Fuel efficiency is improved thanks to the enhanced gas exchange system, reduced internal friction and increased turbocharger efficiency. This means there’s up to 7% improvement in fuel consumption with the new 13lt engine compared to the current generation. That equates to around four litres of diesel saved per hour at full load, Scania says.
