SUPERCHIPS UNLOCKS MORE POWER AND EFFICIENCY FOR YOUR TOW VEHICLE OR BOAT

Earlier this year at the Auckland Boat Show, we caught up with the team
from Superchips NZ Ltd, and we were impressed by the real-world gains they’re achieving in both performance and fuel economy for tow vehicles and marine diesel engines.

Peter James of Superchips NZ Ltd explains that their Custom ECU Remapping service delivers superior performance and lower fuel consumption without the need for physical engine modifications. “If we told you we can give your car up to 35% more power — and at the same time improve its fuel efficiency — you’d be interested, right?” says Peter.

How It Works:

Since the mid-1980s, an onboard computer, the Engine Control Unit (ECU), has managed all engines, governing ignition timing, fuel delivery, boost pressure, throttle response and other critical parameters.

Superchips optimises these settings through extensive development and testing, creating a custom map tailored to each make and model. The process safely eliminates the factory compromises built into many stock ECUs.

In most cases, the remap is installed remotely via the vehicle’s diagnostic port, with no physical chip replacement or ECU removal. The process now is software upgrades, the days of chip changes have long gone. Some models, however, require a direct ECU connection if they can’t be done via the diagnostic port.

Every remap includes a full performance check before the vehicle is returned, and Superchips NZ Ltd backs their service with a money-back guarantee if customers aren’t delighted.

Superchips NZ Ltd specialises in turbo- diesel and turbo-petrol engines, where the most significant gains are achieved. Non turbo petrol vehicles can be upgraded, the main benefit being a lot better throttle response, but smaller gains as there is no turbo to play with. Typically, customers can expect:

For non-turbo petrol vehicles:

• Up to 10% more power with enhanced throttle response.

For turbocharged petrol vehicles:

• Up to 25% more power and up to 25% more midrange torque.

For turbo-diesel vehicles (cars, utes and boats):
• Up to 40% more torque and power with noticeable fuel economy improvements.

These upgrades translate to a more responsive engine, smoother power delivery for easier urban driving, fewer gear changes, and improved acceleration for safer overtaking on the road and better performance and economy on the water. When towing it equates to much better low to mid range torque and pulling up hills in a higher gear, which is where the fuel savings come in.
