Concerned boat owners have been contacting the Outboard Boating Club (OBC) on Auckland’s Tamaki Drive after a suspicious fire engulfed three motorboats late last Tuesday night. The incident, which occurred near Hobson Bay at approximately 9:28 pm, left club members worried about potential damage to their vessels.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson confirmed that firefighters arrived to find three boats ablaze on the club’s hardstand. The fire was extinguished before it could spread further, but the cause has been deemed suspicious, prompting an ongoing investigation.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kathy Bostock urged anyone with information about the fire to contact the police, referencing file number 250114/9974, or call Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111. Police have established a scene guard while forensic and fire investigators examine the site.
Phil Davenport, the general manager of the Outboard Boating Club, reported that the affected boats were privately owned, and he is in the process of notifying the owners. Davenport also assured members that security camera footage from the club is being handed over to assist the police in their investigation.
As the community awaits further updates, the OBC has been inundated with calls from concerned members checking on their boats. The incident has left many shaken, and authorities are determined to uncover the cause behind the suspicious fire.
